One of the unique abilities of the great poets of the past was that they put words in their proper order while simultaneously creating beautiful prose. In the Islamic tradition, to put things in their proper place is called adab. In contrast, to put things where they don’t belong is considered unjust and a form of oppression. This deep connection between poetry and adab is brought to light when we study the great poets of our history. Through their masterpieces, we are taught how to understand the subtleties of life, how to appreciate the natural order of the world we’ve inherited, and how to find meanings that are hidden. The more we understand the breadth and beauty of their words, the more we’ll begin to make deeper connections with our Creator and His creation, and the more peace and happiness we’ll begin to feel. During this course we will examine some of the great masterpiece poems of the Islamic Persian poetry tradition. We’ll learn lessons on how to live a happy life and coexist with the rest of the creation; and we will explore how to properly deal with common life issues like poverty, wealth, sadness, sickness, depression, loss, betrayal, defeat, and success.
