Legal maxims are important foundations of Muslim ethical reasoning. They also aid scholars and students on the path to scholarship with the capacity to grasp the higher principles that undergird the laws of Islam. This course acquaints students with both the overarching and subordinate legal maxims which have guided Muslim scholars for centuries in the exercise of interpretative autonomy (ijtihad).
